Thank You - The Daily Gwei #151
Happy New Year everyone!
It just struck midnight here in Australia which means we’re leaving 2020 behind us and looking forward to a (hopefully) amazing 2021.
I wanted to start by saying thank you to each and every one of you for all of your support throughout 2020 whether that be via supporting this newsletter, the new Daily Gwei YouTube channel, the EthHub Weekly newsletter, the EthHub podcast, donating to my Gitcoin Grant or just simply supporting my tweets. You are all the reason I keep doing what I’m doing every single day so, again, thank you from the bottom of my heart.
Alright so 2020 was probably the weirdest year many of us have ever experienced. We started off with optimism in the crypto markets as ETH and BTC began to recover after a brutal 2 year bear market. Then, we started hearing things about this new virus called “COVID-19” and no one knew just how much disruption it would cause to everyone’s lives during 2020. Then, in March, global markets reacted violently to the uncertainty that COVID-19 was putting on the world - we saw ETH revisit close to its 2019 low of $80 with BTC doing the same by dropping to around $3,600. Then as the year progressed we all experienced the harsh effects that COVID-19 put on our lives - from not being able to travel, to social distancing and wearing masks, to eventually experiencing harsh lockdowns and then topping the year off in November with probably the most controversial U.S. election in history.
Though, on a more positive note, Ethereum has had an amazing year across every conceivable metric. ETH is up around 470% year to date, DeFi has exploded in usage with $15 billion locked, decentralized exchanges finally had their breakout year and now often do $1 billion in daily volumes, the first phase of eth2 had an extremely strong launch and so much more. On top of all of this, we had DeFi summer come around that ended up making people a lot of money during a time where many people were losing their jobs and livelihoods - it’s been totally surreal to witness this play out. Here’s to an amazing 2021 where the world begins to heal from the pains of 2020 and we continue to build out the Ethereum ecosystem to be the absolute best it can be. I’ve personally never been more bullish on Ethereum and the people helping to grow it - let’s crush 2021.
